Percussion & Rhythm Variations
-or- "How to Play Well With Others"

Join this energetic musical playshop where rhythm is our guide. Our time will focus on weaving sonic layers, texture and juxtaposition with a variety of percussive instruments. All are invited as we learn tools for rhythmic entrainment and deep listening by finding the pulse, upbeats and downbeats, counting, changing tempo, coming in and out, and syncopation. Each percussion voice will have the opportunity to add to the sonic experience as different instruments weave together in a playful journey of rhythm. Bring drinking water, bells, shakers, clave, digerido, flutes, frame drums, percussion toys and small drums.

Shekere

Come and learn the art of the deep bass and high rattle that emanates from the African Shekere. Shekere (pronounced SHAY-ker-ray --- also spelled Chekere) is an African percussive instrument made from the calabash gourd that is hollowed, and laced with a woven net of shells or beads. Su invites you to explore this amazingly versatile instrument. Discover how to coax subtle -- and not-so-subtle sound; encourage movement in rhythm; expand the sonic layers, and learn how to incorporate this delightful instrument into any musical environment.

Drumming Without Damage

In this drum workshop we will explore proper technique to avoid injuries and expand the joy of hand drumming. We will openly discuss injuries, health issues, protection of our hands and fingers, strengthening exercises, body mechanics, posture, breathing, mental attitude, etc. All levels are welcome. Find out what your body and your drum are telling you.
